About

In early childhood education, the way we communicate with young children has a profound impact on their self-esteem and motivation. This course explores the difference between praise and encouragement, helping educators understand how their words shape a child’s sense of self-worth. Participants will learn why encouragement fosters intrinsic motivation, resilience, and self-confidence, while excessive praise can sometimes lead to dependence on external validation. Through real-world examples, interactive exercises, and reflective practice, educators will refine their communication skills to support children’s emotional and social development in a meaningful way. Course Goal: Early childhood professionals will develop the skills to support children's self-esteem and confidence through active listening and encouragement, rather than relying solely on praise. Course Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using praise with young children. 2. Identify positive discipline strategies that encourage intrinsic motivation instead of external validation. 3. Practice transforming common praise statements into reflective listening or encouragement. 4. Apply techniques that support children’s autonomy, problem-solving, and self-worth. 5. Understand how self-esteem is developed in early childhood and the educator’s role in shaping it.
