Teaching Preschoolers Language Skills

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

When teaching preschoolers language, it is important to use a variety of methods such as songs, stories, and games to make learning fun and engaging. Additionally, providing opportunities for children to practice speaking and listening in a safe and supportive environment can help them build their language skills. It is also important to use simple, age-appropriate language and to encourage children to ask questions and express themselves. Using real-life examples and objects can also help children make connections between the words they are learning and the world around them.

There are many ways to teach preschoolers language skills, some ways are:

  1. Use everyday activities as opportunities to teach new words and concepts. For example, when cooking, name the ingredients, utensils, and actions.

  2. Encourage children to ask and answer questions, and respond to their questions in a way that helps them expand their vocabulary.

  3. Read to children regularly, and encourage them to ask questions and make predictions about the story.

  4. Play word games and sing songs to help children learn new words and concepts in a fun and engaging way.

  5. Use gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice to support language development.

  6. Provide a print-rich environment, with a variety of books and labels around the classroom, to help children learn to read and write.

  7. Encourage children to tell stories, and provide opportunities for them to act out stories and role-play.

  8. Provide a variety of materials, such as blocks, dolls, and dress-up clothes, to encourage children to use language in imaginative play.

  9. Foster an environment where children feel comfortable expressing themselves and taking risks with language.

  10. Encourage parents to read to their child at home and to talk to their child in the language they feel most comfortable.
